‘California dreaming?’ This $1 million house has people wanting answers. Take a look

Sure, you have your occasional “fixer-upper” houses that land on the real estate market a few times a week. You know — those diamonds in the rough that run for a bargain and often cost a small fortune to flip into your dream house? However, sometimes you come across a fixer-upper that costs a pretty penny to purchase and spruce up.

Like this two-bedroom, one-bathroom property (with two structures, it appears) that’s listed in the Imperial County city of Holtville, California. While the Golden State name may be a draw, is it really worth $1 million? Because that’s how much it’s listed for.

“Here’s your opportunity to renovate a country home or build on almost five acres,” the listing on Zillow.com says. “Built in 1924, this home offers character, but you may choose to build your own or subdivide this lot.”

The property sits on 4.95 acres, the listing says, but judging by the photos, the views look like they come with rolling tumbleweeds. However, the listing does say it’s near places where, you know, people actually stir.

“Across the street is the city limit boundary, and a field is on the opposite side of the lot. Schools are conveniently located, and new housing developments are being built closer and closer to the property. The possibilities are endless to make this your own country paradise. Property is being sold as-is.”

The property was featured on Friday Night Zillow, a segment on Twitter that highlights quirky and fun properties for sale around the globe. And folks were confused.

“California real estate prices: This is ONE MILLION DOLLARS,” Bloomberg reporter Steven Dennis (who runs the fun segment) tweeted along with the listing.

And people were taken aback.

“Five acres of nothing in the middle of nowhere is worth very little, even in California,” one person said.

“Since it is nearly 5 acres, I think they are really selling the ability to be a subdivision,” someone noted. “A developer would buy this. Don’t know why they are not being up front with that.”

“Please explain. I know Cali real estate is crazy, but...” another said.

“What am I missing. There are actual houses nearby for sale for 300k,” one person tweeted.

“California dreaming,” someone said.

“Is it a gold mine?” another asked.

According to Realtor.com, the most expensive “lot” in the zip code is 155 acres and listed for $1.9 million, while the second-most expensive home is $449,000.

Holtville is about 125 miles east of San Diego.
