A Prince Edward Islander was one of 38 people honoured at the inaugural inductions into the Canadian Drag Racing Hall of Fame in Montreal last weekend.
Barrie Poole of Roseneath was the first Canadian to win a major national drag racing championship in the U.S.
In 1970, Poole won the Top Eliminator Crown in Pomona, California in front of a crowd of 90,000.
Poole went on to win many more North American drag races, and was also recognized as one of the best builders of performance engines. Ford Canada named him racer of the year in 1970. In the mid-1970s he also became a successful snowmobile racer.
Poole was inducted into the P.E.I. Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.
The 75 year old now lives in Chatham, Ontario.
