Candice King on Her Return as Caroline in “The Originals” and How It Was Supposed to Be a “Quick” Goodbye

And how she ended up in five episodes instead of one.

The Vampire Diaries actor Candice King says the highly anticipated return of her character Caroline and Klaus wasn't necessarily something that was planned, and in fact, everything that's happening in The Originals was riffed on because it's what the fans wanted to see.

Last week, the first trailer for the new season of The Originals debuted and left some fans dismayed with how little Klaus and Caroline were featured, despite the major buildup that this would be their chance to reconnect. It seemed as though the season would be more focused on the Mikaelson family reuniting, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. And earlier this year, showrunner Julie Plec said that fans shouldn't expect too much from the reunion of the much-beloved ship on the spin-off series, and that there are "no promises" about what's going to happen between the two characters. “Of course there’s still that electricity between them," she said. "That’s always going to exist. No promises of where that goes, but it’s nice to see again.”

However, in a new interview, Candice opened up about reprising her Vampire Diaries character on the final season of The Originals, and offered a little bit of background information on what went into the planning.

“Julie Plec always had a very clear idea of what she wanted for Caroline and Klaus together,” she told NKD Mag according to Just Jared Jr. “It wasn’t exactly always in line with what the fans wanted for those characters…she wrote very important moments that she wanted for those characters, but I think she also gave a lot to the fans and what they wanted to see.”

She went on to say that the final season of The Originals gave fans the relationship they "wanted for so long," and that they were only supposed to have a brief reunion. “When Vampire ended, it was just supposed to be a quick little pop-in to say goodbye to the Caroline and Klaus storyline for the fans," she said. “We all felt that it would be really significant and important for anyone who supported – or ‘shipped’ as the kids say – those two together.” Ultimately, she and Julie worked together and decided to bring fans the #Klaroline reunion of their dreams, and now, Caroline is in five episodes into the show.

Though what's going to happen between them this season is still shrouded in a bit of mystery, it seems that if it was good enough to extend the plot line into four more episodes, it's got to be good.
