Car crashes into Beaufort/Port Royal fire station Tuesday; 2 drivers taken to hospital

Two drivers on Robert Smalls Parkway were taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after a two-vehicle crash on the highway, sending one car crashing into the front of a City of Beaufort/Town of Port Royal Fire Department station.

No fire personnel were injured in the crash, department spokesperson Ross Vezin told The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette. Damage to the station was minimal, but repair efforts will include the full replacement of at least one window.

The car was heading north on S.C. 170 around 1:45 p.m. Tuesday when it collided with another vehicle, then veered through the grass into Station 4, located off the highway just south of Bridges Preparatory School. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with non-fatal injuries, Vezin said, and both cars were towed from the scene shortly after.

Authorities closed the rightmost northbound lane of Robert Smalls Parkway for about two hours after the crash, but the highway should fully reopen around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Vezin said.

The SC Highway Patrol is investigating Tuesday afternoon’s incident. Additional information about the crash was not immediately available.
