Rio Linda carjacking suspect arrested after hourslong standoff that forced resident to flee home

Sacramento County sheriff’s SWAT deputies, after more than three hours of negotiating, arrested a suspect holed up in a Rio Linda residence Wednesday after he allegedly stole a car from a woman.

Deputies arrived about 11 a.m. to the 6800 block of 18th Street for reports of an unrelated trespassing and saw the carjacking unfold, said Sgt. Amar Gandhi, a spokesman with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

A sheriff’s deputy fired one gunshot toward the suspect, but it’s unknown if he was hit, Gandhi said. The suspect then crashed and fled into a home while forcing the resident inside to leave, Gandhi added.

It was unclear what the suspect crashed into or why the deputy fired his service weapon.

The resident was not injured in the ordeal, Gandhi said.

SWAT deputies remained at the scene Wednesday afternoon working to speak with the suspect inside the home, he said.

The man was arrested at about 3:15 p.m. by deputies and suffered minor injuries after a K-9 officer bit him during the apprehension, Gandhi said.
