Carrboro man drowns while swimming in Jordan Lake, 3rd drowning since May

A 52-year-old man from Carrboro drowned in Jordan Lake on Tuesday night, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said.

Eduardo Martinez was swimming shortly before 9 p.m. near the intersection of Martha’s Chapel Road and Farrington Road, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Family members saw him struggling in the water but could not help him.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Eduardo Martinez during this very difficult time,” Sheriff Mike Roberson said in the release. “Losing a loved one in such a sudden and tragic manner is devastating, and we are here to support the family in any way we can.”

This is the second drowning in Jordan Lake in the past two weeks and the third drowning since late May.

June 15: Pradip Kumar Bhujel, 25, of Charlotte died while fishing at the Jordan Lake Wildlife Area on N.C. 751, the Sheriff’s Office said.

May 26: Bryan Guzman, 16, of Winston-Salem, drowned in the water while celebrating a friend’s birthday near a picnic area off Beaver Creek Road, the Sheriff’s Office said.
