Catholic teacher Jennifer Mason pleads guilty in student sex case
A former Catholic school teacher will spend the next two years in a federal penitentiary after pleading guilty to sexually exploiting a former student.
The victim was just 14-years-old when Jennifer Mason began showing interest and became friendly with his family.
The court was told they did not consummate the relationship until the boy was 16.
At that point they began having sex in Mason's car and would spend time in hotels where they would watch Disney movies.
The boy would not testify. He says he loves Mason and would go to jail for her.
While the teenager maintains he was not victimized, the judge says he is a victim and may be a ticking time bomb.
Behaviour must be deterred, says judge
When handing down the two-year prison sentence, the judge says the 31-year-old has lost everything but her behaviour must be denounced and deterred.
Mason has friends in Edmonton and the judge recommended she serve her term there. She must also submit a DNA sample and register as a sexual offender.
Mason was charged earlier this year after a member of the public spotted suspicious activity in a vehicle parked in northwest Calgary.
It was alleged she and a teenage male student, who previously attended her school, were in a sexual relationship between August 2012 and November 2013.
Mason was suspended from teaching and charged with sexual assault, invitation to sexual touching, sexual exploitation by a person in a position of trust and sexual interference.
In exchange for pleading guilty to sexual exploitation, the other charges against her were dropped by prosecutors.
