Celebrities Pay Tribute to Kobe Bryant on the Grammys Red Carpet
Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Maria Onore passed away this morning.
They were both in a helicopter that crashed in Calabasas, California.
The Grammys are being held at the Staples Center tonight, where Kobe used to play for the Los Angeles Lakers.
This morning, news broke that legendary basketball player Kobe Bryant passed away in a helicopter crash. Sadly, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Maria Onore also passed away in the crash, according to the Associated Press.
Kobe, of course, is most famous for playing on the Los Angeles Lakers and winning five NBA championships before he retired in 2016. While on the team, Kobe played at the Staples Center in L.A., where the 2020 Grammys are being held tonight. Celebrities and fans have already taken to social media to express their deepest condolences and share what Kobe has meant to them, and some are now doing the same on the red carpet.
While talking to Cosmopolitan's red carpet reporter Brandi Fowler, model Tess Holliday and singers JoJo and Bebe Rexha shared where they were when they heard the news and what they think Kobe's legacy will be.
Bebe Rexha admitted:
"I feel so sad right now. My heart's broken. I want to have fun tonight but I feel guilty especially being here at the Staples Center. All you can do is send your prayers. I think with Kobe—I never met him—but he was such an icon. He's a legend. He's inspired so many people. I just want to send my love to his loved ones. I don't even know. Where do you start?"
And talking to Variety, rapper Saweetie said, "I felt weird getting ready, it felt weird putting on the makeup, it felt weird taking pictures because someone who was so important to our culture is gone."

Here's what Tess had to say:
“We were getting ready and my stylist said, ‘Wait, is it true that Kobe just passed?’ And my heart sank, like it does when you hear anything. And it’s not like I knew him, but I’ve been in Los Angeles for over a decade and this was his city and you feel it. And my 14-year-old is a huge Lakers fan and it was devastating. It feels really eerie to be in the Staples Center literally hours after he passed, but I hope in a way we can honor him. It kind of feels like, in a way we have to say a big party for him. I don’t mean that in an insensitive way. I just mean that we’re here celebrating all these artists and it’s nice to be surrounded by a lot of love.”
JoJo explained:
“It’s like a cloud over the carpet for sure. I was in the car on the way over here [when I found out] and me and my manager just started screaming because she loves basketball—she knows it—and for me, I’ve always looked up to him as an example of class and work ethic and excellence. I don’t know much about sports, but I love that mindset. I love the mentality of gracefully winning and losing and going through all of that and what he had just done with giving LeBron [James] that moment when he surpassed him and whatever the technical sports term is. It’s devastating. It feels so unbelievable—unbelievably sad for his family."
This is incredibly upsetting news, and our thoughts are with Kobe and Gianna's loved ones.
