Centre County Coroner’s Office releases identities of 3 killed in Interstate 80 crash

Three members of a family from Indiana died early Tuesday morning after related crashes on Interstate 80.

The Centre County Coroner’s Office released the identities of the three people who were killed after the passenger car they were in collided with one tractor-trailer and then was struck by another. Thomas Feick, 48, his wife Catherine Feick, 49, and their son, 18-year-old Derek Feick, of Porter County, Indiana, all died in the crash, Centre County Deputy Coroner Judy Pleskonko said Wednesday.

Emergency responders were called to I-80 West near Milesburg just after midnight on Tuesday. According to state police at Rockview, two tractor-trailers and a passenger vehicle were involved in related crashes, with the three people in the car suffering fatal injuries.

The first collision was between a tractor-trailer and the car. The tractor-trailer went off the right side of the road and came to rest down an embankment. The driver had suspected minor injuries.

The passenger car came to rest on the right shoulder of the roadway before it was struck by a second tractor-trailer. Two of the occupants were ejected with fatal injuries and a third passenger sustained fatal injuries in the vehicle, police wrote.

The driver of the second tractor-trailer, which crashed off the left side of the roadway over an embankment, was taken by helicopter to UPMC Altoona. An intervening bystander who had been walking to approach the initial crash scene was struck by the passenger car during the collision with the second tractor-trailer and was also flown to UPMC Altoona with serious injuries.

Officials believe a dog that was in the car with the Feick family escaped the crash and may be wandering around the crash site near Exit 156 of I-80 West. The two-year-old collie-poodle mix is gray and responds to the name Hazel. Anyone who sees a dog matching the description should call state police at Rockview at 814-355-7545.

A full closure of I-80 West between the Milesburg to Snow Shoe exits was in place for about 15 hours Tuesday. The road fully reopened shortly after 5 p.m.
