Here are Centre County high school wrestling highlights, leaderboards through Jan. 21

The high school wrestling season is slowly coming to an end with just six weeks left, which means action is becoming scarce.

For the second straight week, Mother Nature limited the action even more by forcing matches on Tuesday to be postponed.

Bald Eagle Area, Bellefonte and Philipsburg-Osceola were the only schools to see any competition this week. The Mounties had the most as they took part in the Juniata Duals on Saturday, giving them four duals this week.

P-O went 2-2 on the week. It suffered a 37-28 loss to the Eagles on Thursday. The match was originally scheduled for Jan. 9, but weather forced it to this week.

During the Juniata Duals, the Mounties picked up wins over Harrisburg (45-17) and South Williamsport (46-21). Their loss came to Berks Catholic (35-21).

The Red Raiders suffered a loss to Huntingdon (45-29) on Wednesday as the pair were supposed to wrestle on Tuesday.

Penns Valley was supposed to wrestle P-O on Tuesday, instead it got the week off. The Rams will see the mat again on Jan. 26 in the Fred Bell Tournament in Grove City.

State College had the week off. The Little Lions haven’t competed since Jan. 14, so their match on Jan. 25 against Mifflin County will be a welcome competition.

Philipsburg-Osceola’s Daisy Glessner and Bald Eagle Area’s Grace Crestani wrestle in the 170 lb bout of the girls match on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024.

The Lady Mounties and Lady Eagles made history this week by competing in the first girls dual in Centre County’s history. P-O came away with a 24-18 victory.

P-O’s Veda Kephart, Isabella DuVall, Marleana DuVall and Annanella Hunt all received forfeits. BEA’s Angelina Grieb, Eden Eveleth and Grace Crestani all earned pins.

Eveleth, Crestani and Isabella DuVall are the lone wrestlers to have double-digit wins this year. Crestani leads the county with 12 victories and nine pins.

Bald Eagle Area’s Eden Eveleth faces Philipsburg-Osceola’s Halee Grubb in the 112 lb bout of the girls match on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024.
Bald Eagle Area’s Eden Eveleth faces Philipsburg-Osceola’s Halee Grubb in the 112 lb bout of the girls match on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024.

Eveleth added a new time to the fastest falls list when she stuck the Lady Mounties’ Halee Grubb in 32 seconds. It was the fifth fastest fall in the county.

State College girls competed at the Battle Against Breast Cancer Tournament at Sharpsville High School on Saturday. The Lady Little Lions’ results weren’t immediately available Sunday.

Wins

The Mounties’ Marcus Gable, Caleb Hummel and Colton Chapman each had a perfect week, going 4-0.

Gable has 25 victories on the year now, which leads P-O. All of his wins came with bonus points as he had a major decision, pin and a pair of forfeits.

Hummel had bonus points in all of his wins too, with three forfeits and a pin. He has 20 wins this year.

Hummel’s 20th victory was a forfeit against South Williamsport. Hummel’s teammate Averi Gable also got his 20th win with a forfeit against South Williamsport.

There are now 11 county wrestlers to have 20-plus wins on the season with a handful of others closing in on that mark.

Chapman has just 13 wins so far, but this week he had a pair of pins and a pair of decisions. He earned his 10th win this week when he pinned BEA’s Cameron Dubbs in 1:57 on Thursday.

Bald Eagle Area’s Caleb Close controls Philipsburg-Osceola’s Ean Williams in the 189 lb match during the dual on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024.

Major decisions

P-O’s Nate Fleck was the lone county wrestler to secure multiple major decisions this week.

He earned both victories on Saturday.

Fleck topped Harrisburg’s Naelson Vazquez, 15-5, and then earned a 13-2 win over South Williamsport’s Jonah White.

Fleck now has five major decisions on the season to be tied with Marcus Gable for the county lead.

Gable earned his fifth major decision this week, when he shut out BEA’s Mason Reese, 10-0.

The Eagles’ Caden Judice is tied with Close just one behind Fleck and Gable. Judice earned his fourth major decision when he topped the Mounties’ Averi Gable, 9-1.

There are 33 county wrestlers to secure at least one major decision this year.

Bellefonte’s Noah Weaver (left) looks to score on Westmont Hilltop’s David Ray in their 145-pound quarterfinals match of the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference tournament on Friday at Tyrone. Weaver beat Ray, 2-1 in rideouts.
