Chapel Thrill: Clemson basketball completes historic upset of No. 3 UNC

And then there were two.

The Clemson men’s basketball team has officially won its second ever game in Chapel Hill, home of the storied UNC men’s basketball program. And the latest win gave the 2023-24 season life in the process.

The Tigers toppled the No. 3 Tar Heels, 80-76, on Tuesday night in the Smith Center, delivering a shocker to the No. 1 team in the ACC standings and moving to 2-60 all-time in Chapel Hill and 2-29 in the Smith Center.

UNC never led in the game, and Clemson led by as many as 16 points in its signature win of the season. It’ll be a huge boost for coach Brad Brownell’s squad, which remains in good NCAA Tournament position but had lost six of its last nine ACC games. Center PJ Hall and guard Joe Girard III were Clemson’s leading scorers.

Clemson lost its first 59 games in a row in Chapel Hill, an NCAA record, before beating the Tar Heels on their home court in overtime during the 2020 season.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
