Cher says her mother Georgia Holt has died at age 96

  • Cher's mother Georgia Holt has died at age 96, the singer said.

  • She first shared news of her mother's death in a tweet posted early Sunday morning.

  • Holt was an actress, singer, and model known for small roles in "I Love Lucy" and "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet."

Singer and actress Georgia Holt has died at age 96, according to her daughter Cher.

Cher first shared news of her mother's death early Sunday morning, tweeting, "Mom is gone" with a sad face emoji.

Holt was born Jackie Jean Crouch in Kensett, Arkansas, in June 1926. She was best known for small parts in "The Adventures of Harriet and Ozzie," "I Love Lucy," and "Jane Wyman Presents the Fireside Theatre," according to IMDb.

She also had uncredited roles in several movies in the 1950s, including "Lovely to Look At," "A Life of Her Own," and "Watch the Birdie." Holt was heavily featured in her daughter's 2013 documentary, "Dear Mom, Love Cher," which dove into her mother's childhood, her six marriages and divorces, her career, and her relationship with her children, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The documentary also featured a duet between the mother-daughter pair called "I'm Just Your Yesterday," which was released as part of Holt's 2013 album "Honky Tonk Woman." Cher and Holt later performed the song on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, with Cher telling DeGeneres that the album, which was recorded in the 1980s, had been lost in the garage for decades.

Cher also shared several old photos of Holt on social media in recent years. In June, the singer tweeted a photo of Holt posing among plants, writing that her mom had the photo taken "back in the day" in a location called Griffith Park.

Cher tweeted about her mother's health troubles earlier this year

In early September, Cher tweeted that her mother had been hospitalized for pneumonia and had been sick "off and on." She added that Holt was "getting better" after being released from the hospital.

Holt's cause of death has not been shared. She is survived by her two daughters, Cher, born Cherilyn Sarkisian, and Georganne LaPiere, as well as two grandchildren, Variety reports.

Several stars expressed their sympathy on social media for the pop legend and her family over the weekend. Actress Yvette Nicole Brown shared a clip of the mother and daughter from "Dear Mom, Love Cher" on Twitter Sunday, writing that she was "sending love" to Cher.

"I've known of the beautiful Georgia Holt as long as I've known of her beautiful, talented daughter Cher. I'm happy she had her on her journey thru life as long as she did," she tweeted. "Still, the loss of your mom is just devastating. Sending love #Cher. May your hero #RIP."

Hilary Clinton also responded to Cher's tweet with her condolences:
