Chicago company chooses South End site to relocate headquarters with 150 jobs
A Midwest railroad car company will relocate its headquarters to South End in Charlotte.
TTX will move its headquarters from Chicago to Charlotte, where it will occupy about 70,000-square-feet on the top two floors at The Line, 2151 Hawkins St. next year, the company said in a news release Wednesday. The 16-story tower fronts the Rail Trail in Charlotte.
TTX has over 170,000 flatcars, boxcars and gondolas for shipping for automotive, paper and forest, metals, machinery, wind energy and other markets.
TTX will invest $14.5 million and create 150 jobs in Charlotte, including bringing about 100 employees relocating from Chicago.
The offices are expected to be completed in the spring, with an official office opening slated for later next year, according to TTX.
The TTX space will include a café and training facility. The two-floor office has been designed by Gensler, with the upfit being managed by CBRE Project Management.

TTX has been headquartered in Chicago since it moved there from Philadelphia in 1971. TTX railcar pooling company was founded as Trailer Train in 1955 by the Pennsylvania Railroad, according to the company’s website.
The pandemic provided an opportunity to re-evaluate how and where TTX operates, the company said over the summer when it announced the headquarters would move to Charlotte.
“Our company is positioned to provide strong rail and freight car management services from the Charlotte metro area,” TTX CEO Thomas Wells previously said in a statement.
TTX’s signature yellow railcars are shared by the pool owners of seven North American railroads, according to the company’s website. TTX buys and maintains the railcars.
About The Line
The Line, owned by CBRE and Portman Holdings, was completed last year. It features 290,000 square feet of office space with a first-of-its-kind in Charlotte sky lobby and outdoor terrace.
Other office tenants at the line are Northeastern University, Society Awards, Experis, SignatureFD and Foundry Commercial.
The 20,000-square-foot ground-floor retail space includes Sycamore Brewing, Savi Provisions, Grit Box Fitness and Chapter 6 by Jon Dressler, plus a 9,500-square-foot open-air passage.
