Chiefs’ Drue Tranquill using Andy Reid’s line to recruit free agent receivers to KC

The Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday afternoon released wide receiver Mike Williams, and not long afterward a former teammate reached out.

It was Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill.

A year ago, Tranquill was a free agent and he was recruited to the Chiefs by coach Andy Reid. In a text message, Reid told Tranquill “see red and think Super Bowls.”

Tranquill signed with the Chiefs and donned a red jersey in Super Bowl LVIII, which the Chiefs won against the San Francisco 49ers. So, yeah, Reid nailed it with his pitch to Tranquill to join the Chiefs.

The fit in Kansas City has been so good for Tranquill that he signed a three-year contact with the Chiefs this week. He is now using Reid’s recruiting tactic to get a veteran wide receiver to come join him. In a message on X (formerly Twitter), Tranquill wrote to both Williams and former Cardinals and Ravens wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown.

Here are those social media posts from Tranquill, the recruiter:

Williams, who played only three games last season because he suffered a torn ACL, was wanted back by the Chargers, NFL.com reported, but he chose to test the free-agent market.

Brown caught 51 passes for 574 yards and four touchdowns last season with Arizona.
