19-month-old boy dies after being struck by delivery van in Mississauga parking lot
A 19-month-old boy has died in hospital after he was struck by a white delivery van in a Mississauga parking lot on Wednesday afternoon, Peel police say.
The collision happened near Confederation Parkway and Paisley Boulevard West, near Queensway West. Emergency crews were called at 5:25 p.m. to the parking lot of an apartment building, where the child was in life-threatening condition.
The vehicle belongs to a courier company.
Const. Akhil Mooken, spokesperson for the Peel Regional Police, said the service extends condolences to infant's family.
"It's unimaginable what that family is going through and we are certainly keeping them in our thoughts," Mooken told reporters near the scene.
Peel police initially said the child was girl, but later said they'd made an error and that the child was in fact a boy.
The boy was with his mother when the vehicle hit him, Mooken said. No one else was injured.
Mooken said the driver of the vehicle took the boy with her mother to a local hospital before paramedics arrived. Trillium Health Partners - Mississauga Hospital is around the corner from the parking lot, he said. The boy was pronounced dead in hospital, he said.
The driver and the mother were not known to each other, he added.
The driver is said to be co-operating with police, but the vehicle is no longer at the scene because the driver transported the boy and her mother to hospital. There is a second scene at the hospital where the van is parked, police said.
Peel police's major collision bureau will investigate the collision and when that investigation is completed, police will determine if charges will be laid, he added.
"How the collision itself occurred is still part of our investigation. That's something our major collision investigators will be looking into to determine the sequence of events that led to the child being struck," Mooken said.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dashboard camera footage of the incident is urged to come forward to police.
The crash comes a day after a three-year-old boy was killed in a collision in Toronto's west end.
In that incident, Toronto police said a man and two children were hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Burnhamthorpe Road and The East Mall in Etobicoke.
The boy died at the scene and his older sister was taken to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children.
