A six-year-old boy was seriously injured this week after tobogganing down a hill and into a residential street, colliding with a SUV.

First responders were called Tuesday afternoon to the scene, located in the northeast community of Marlborough, near Maryln Way and Marlyn Place.

Moments earlier, police say, a motorist was travelling west on Marlyn Way N.E.  As the SUV arrived at an intersection, the boy and his toboggan slid down toward Marlyn Way.

"The child slid into the passenger side of the vehicle as it was driving, knocking him off the sled and into the roadway," police said in a statement Wednesday.

The driver stopped the vehicle and remained on scene following the collision, police said.

Alberta Health Services said in a statement that the boy was taken Alberta Children's Hospital in serious condition. An update on the child's condition was not provided.

Calgary police continue to investigate.

The City of Calgary encourages residents to check out its website when looking for a place to toboggan. All of the 22 sites listed are evaluated for a number of things including:

  • The safety of the landing site.

  • The absence of trees.

  • The grade of the hill.

  • The proximity away from traffic, off-leash areas, bike paths and other areas where user conflicts could occur.

Calgary bylaws prohibit tobogganing or sledding downhill in any city-maintained park except for those listed, but does not apply to private, provincial or federal land.
