A Chinese international soccer player is under fire from both fans and his wife after his poor performance contributed to a 1-0 defeat to Iran in a crucial World Cup qualifier.

Jiang Zhipeng was at fault for the only goal of Tuesday’s game and in the aftermath, his wife revealed on social media that he was cheating on her and had filed for divorce.

“In nearly three-and-a-half years out of four-year marriage, he was sleeping with other women and now he is trying to drive me to an early grave despite our decades-long relationship,” Zhang Zhiyue posted on social network Weibo.

Zhipeng, who plays his club football for Guangzhou R&F in the Chinese Super League, has been married to Zhiyue for four years.

The 28-year-old defender’s backward header set up Iran’s game-winner, which killed off China’s hopes of reaching the 2018 World Cup in Russia. After registering only five points in seven games, Chinese media called the result a ‘nightmare.’

Zhiyue posted pictures of her husband with his reported mistress and has reportedly called for him to be banned from playing for the national team and Guangzhou.

“I supported him when he was still a poor lad and my mum treated him like her own son, my family even chipped in with 1 million RMB to cover the down payment for his house in Shanghai.

“We didn’t have a wedding ceremony and our relationship was never made public.”

A week to forget on and off the pitch for Zhipeng.
