Chris Hemsworth is a lot of things: hammer-wielding superhero, fearless docuseries host, and most importantly for our purposes, a serious watch collector. His taste, which runs from Audemars Piguet to Bulgari to Rolex, is always on point. From his solid-gold, Matthew Williams-designed Royal Oak to the ever-striking Octo, Hemsworth knows how to pick a winner.

"Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" Australian Premiere - Arrivals

Don Arnold

For the premiere of the latest Mad Max film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the Aussie actor was spotted with a heavy hitter of an AP poking out from the cuff of his gray suit: the Royal Oak Double Balance Openworked ref. 15407 BC. A special version of the Royal Oak, it features dual balance wheels and balance spring assemblies in series, which offer increased chronometric precision—plus a great way to guarantee that people will leave you alone at a cocktail party, should you decide to bring up the term “increased chronometric precision.”

Beyond the accuracy inherent in this design, the openworked components visible via the sapphire dial are beautiful in and of themselves, with satin and mirror finishes abounding. Pink gold, applied hour markers make telling the time a cinch—though reading the time in the dark may actually be easier given its ample lume.

Hand-finished to a degree uncommon even amongst AP’s high-end offerings, the ref. 15407 BC features the famous, Gérald Genta-designed Royal Oak case in stainless steel: Measuring 41 millimeters in diameter and just 9.9 millimeters thick, it boasts an octagonal bezel—inspired, so the story goes, by a vintage diving helmet Genta came across—with eight screws and an expanding, polished bevel that seamlessly extends to the integrated bracelet. This bracelet, which is part of the charm of the Royal Oak design, is hand-finished, stemming from a 1972 design that ushered in the era of the “luxury sports watch.” The automatic movement, an Audemars Piguet Calibre 3132, consists of 245 parts and has a power reserve of 45 hours.

While not the type of watch you’d want to bring to the beach despite the Royal Oak’s “luxury sports watch” designation, the Double Balance Openworked is certainly among the most singularly attractive and well-finished watches in the AP oeuvre. A far cry from the solid-gold brutalism of the Matthew Williams collab Offshore Chronographnot a dig, just to be clear—it tells a story of refinement and classical watchmaking paired to the forward-thinking genius of Swiss designer Genta.

Bad Bunny’s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

Here’s a fun one: Bad Bunny was spotted on tour in a small Royal Oak that was sold via Dover Street Market LA by none other than Dimepiece founder and GQ contributor Brynn Wallner and the good folks at Foundwell. (In deference to Brynn, we shall be referring to this diminutive ticker as a “T.T.R.O,” or “Teeny Tiny Royal Oak.”) Scaled down to 25 millimeters and featuring a solid blue dial, it still boasts nearly all the classic, Genta-designed attributes that we know and love: an integrated bracelet, an octagonal bezel with eight screws, applied indices with a matching handset, and a date window at 3 o’clock.

Matthew McConaughey’s Jacob & Co. The World Is Yours Dual Time Zone

In a far cry from his Doxa-wearing days as Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt, Matthew McConauhey strapped on a 43-millimeter, 18-karat rose gold world timer from none other than Jacob & Co., jeweler to the stars, at the annual Mack, Jack & McConaughey fundraising gala. Powered by the automatic Manufacture Jacob & Co. Calibre JCAA11 movement, the watch features a laser-engraved world map situated against a lacquered blue background, with dual sub-dials at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock. Inspired by a vintage watch given to the brand’s founder Jacob Arabo by his father Nison Arabo, its dual dials can be set independently, making for a simple, elegant way to track both local and home time.

Ryan Gosling/Beavis’s TAG Heuer Carrera “Glassbox”

If you didn’t catch Gosling’s star turn as an unwitting Beavis on SNL a couple weeks back, perhaps you caught wind of his and Mikey Day’s appearance at the premiere of The Fall Guy dressed in full cartoon regalia—false noses and hairdos included. On Gosling’s wrist during this seamless wardrobe change was the TAG Heuer Carrera “Glassbox” in its “reverse panda” guise, with three silver chronograph totalizers set against a black dial. Based on the design codes of the reference 2447 NS Carrera from the 1960s, the newer “Glassbox” version offers a curved inner flange and sapphire crystal that increase legibility. (The jury’s still out on whether or not the actual Beavis would’ve opted for a Carrera or a Metallica-themed Nixon.)

Drake Maye’s Breitling Super Chronomat B01 44

It would seem that newly minted Patriots QB Drake Maye already knows how to pick a killer watch. The 22-year-old Huntsville, North Carolina native was spotted rocking a Breitling Super Chronomat, a stainless steel and red gold chronograph whose 44-millimeter diameter and 14.4-millimeter case depth is negligible…if you happen to be 6’4” and 225 pounds. Boasting 200 meters of water resistance, its triple-register chronograph functionality is powered by Breitling’s own B01 movement, which provides 70 hours of power reserve as well as a date window. Inspired by 1980s Chronomat models, the Super Chronomat B01 44 includes a unidirectional, rotating timing bezel—a welcome feature that allows for a wide array of timing possibilities.
