Church sign damaged in single-vehicle crash in Fresno. Car caught on fire, police say

A driver escaped serious injuries Sunday night after crashing into a church sign.

Officers responded just after 9:30 p.m. to Maroa and Bullard avenues and found a single-vehicle that had been driving eastbound Bullard and suddenly veered off the roadway and collided with a cement sign at St. Anthony of Padua church, Fresno police Lt. Leslie Williams said.

Williams said the driver got out of the vehicle on his own or had help from witnesses before the vehicle caught on fire.

The Fresno Fire Department responded and put out the fire.

The driver in his 30s was treated at the scene and taken to a local hospital with a possible leg injury, Williams said.

Officers investigated the collision as a DUI, Williams said.
