Citadel spoilers follow.
The streamer confirmed on Thursday (May 25) that it has officially renewed the spy thriller series for a second season, with its leading stars set to return.
This time around, Extraction's Joe Russo will be directing the entire season after bringing Citadel to screens with brother Joe Russo, based on an idea from writers Josh Appelbaum (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), David Weil (Hunters) and Bryan Oh (The Vampire Diaries).
Anthony and Joe Russo — veterans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — said in a statement today: "[Our company] AGBO is thrilled to embark on this next phase of the spyverse with Jen, Vernon, and the entire team at Amazon.
"The innovative storytelling of Citadel has paved the way for an incredible, worldwide collaboration with creatives in front of and behind the camera.”
Amazon is calling Citadel Prime Video's second most-watched original series outside the US, as well as its fourth most-watched worldwide.
The action-adventure series features an international cast with its twisty-turny storyline where the agents of a fallen spy agency must regain their memories after having them wiped by enemy organisation Manticore.
Stanley Tucci's mysterious character, Bernard Orlick, reactivates former Citadel agents Mason / Kyle (Game of Thrones' Richard Madden) and Nadia (Love Again's Priyanka Chopra Jonas) in order to stop Manticore's latest plot for global domination.
Amazon and MGM Studios boss Jennifer Salke said of the renewal: "Citadel is a truly global phenomenon. Our goal was always to create a new franchise rooted in original IP that would grow Prime Video’s international audience. This show has drawn an outsize number of new international customers to Prime Video.
"Its massive worldwide debut audience is a testament to Joe and Anthony Russo’s remarkable vision, the incredible talents of Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Lesley Manville and Stanley Tucci, and the tireless work of the creative teams, cast, and crew. Given the overwhelming number of our customers who have embraced this show, we are not only thrilled to share the premiere episode of Citadel globally without membership, but also confirm that the series will return for a second season.”
The first season of Citadel is available to stream now on Prime Video.
