City of Calgary's pumpkin and leaf drop off deadline nears

The City of Calgary wants your rotting jack-o-lanterns and raked leaves.

The bagged leaves and pumpkins can be discarded at drop-off locations across the city until Sunday, Nov. 8, as part of a program put on by Calgary's Waste and Recycling Services.

The city will turn the materials into compost and mulch, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the landfill, according to a press release.

The leaf and pumpkin composting program is for residential use only.

People are asked not to include rocks, branches, soil or sod and are urged to use paper waste bags instead of plastic so they can be composted with the leaves and pumpkins.

Landfill locations are closed on Sundays.
