Colman Domingo, Ryan Gosling and More Men Who Rewrote Red Carpet Fashion This Year
From Ryan Gosling’s rainbow assortment of custom Gucci suiting to Colman Domingo’s brightly hued attire, real men wear pink — or any other color, for that matter.
“Everyone is feeling freer to wear what makes them feel beautiful and authentic,” Gosling’s stylist Mark Avery tells Variety.

“May December” star Charles Melton has landed on countless best-dressed lists for the head-turning looks he has served since the Todd Haynes film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May. He oozed old Hollywood glamour when he walked up the Palais’ red-carpet stairway in a white Giorgio Armani tux. His movie star status was sealed at the Golden Globes with another Armani tux — but this time, he went double-breasted blue.
“It’s such a fun creative process,” Melton tells Variety of working with his stylist Samantha McMillen. “She comes in with a bunch of clothes and we just put on what feels nice. It’s exciting. It’s an expression.”
And so are accessories.
As much as color helped men stake their individuality, jewelry and watches made some shine more than others. Barry Keoghan complemented his red Louis Vuitton ensemble at the Golden Globes with a brooch from Tiffany & Co. Gosling often dons a watch from Tag Heuer while Melton paired his Globes look with an Omega timepiece, Neil Lane cufflinks and a diamond stud earring from Briony Raymond New York.
“Brooches are always great to give a pop on the carpet,” says stylist Warren Alfie Baker, whose clients include “All of Us Strangers” star Andrew Scott, Ben Affleck and Glen Powell. “Rings are also a good way to show some personality. It’s the accessory that could take it from an 8 to a 10.”
And even if someone decides to go black for a carpet, they did it with a twist this season. Just days after almost breaking the internet with the release of his Calvin Klein underwear campaign, Jeremy Allen White opted for a black sheer top under his CK black suit at the Globes. “Sheer tops are a great way to make a tux feel sexy without having to go bare-chested,” Baker says. “The material gives a little naughtiness without having to go full naughty.”
Paul Mescal’s Gucci black suit at the BAFTAs featured white intarsia knitting on the lapel. The “All of Us Strangers” star also slipped on a Cartier watch along with matching 18k white gold pieces from the French jewelry house, including an earring, a lapel gem and cufflinks.
As Avery puts it so well: “The old rules are out the window whether it’s color or dress codes.”
