Commonwealth Games: Mixed doubles duo Terry Hee, Jessica Tan stun top seeds to reach final
SINGAPORE — Singapore shuttlers Terry Hee and Jessica Tan reached the mixed doubles final at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, after stunning top-seeded Malaysians Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing in the semi-finals.
The husband-wife pair won in straight games 25-23, 21-18 at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham to earn a shot at the gold medal on Monday, when they face England's Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith in the final.
Ellis and Smith defeated Scotland's Adam Hall and Julie McPherson 21-14, 21-7 in the other semi-final.
Hee and Tan, who are ranked world No.35, could become the first Singapore shuttlers to win a Commonwealth Games gold after Li Li landed the women's singles gold in Manchester in 2002.
The duo - who were married last October - had been in good form this year, winning the India Open title in January.
In the women's singles semi-finals, Singapore's Yeo Jia Min battled hard but could not overcome top-seeded Pusarla V. Sindhu of India, losing 19-21, 17-21.
