Coronation Street star Rob Mallard explains Daisy and Daniel's new crisis

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Rob Mallard has explained Daisy and Daniel's latest crisis.

In upcoming scenes Daisy finds a lump in her breast and tells Daniel who insists on taking her to the doctor.

Having lost his wife Sinead to cancer, Daniel gets drunk at the Rovers failing to show up at the medical centre with Daisy, before later staggering in to the appointment drunk.

Speaking of Daniel's reaction to the news, Mallard said: "It's his worst nightmare that it would either happen to him or someone else that he cares about.

"Then doubly worse this is someone that Bertie is growing closer to, a second chance of a mother figure for him and yet again this woman he loves might be struck down with cancer."

Discussing his response, Mallard said it just makes Daniel "want to run away" because he knows what to expect.

"It's quite a selfish response, you think: 'I've been through this once and I can't do it again' because you know what's going to happen, you know what each of you are going to go through.

Choosing to calm his nerves with a whisky, Daniel gets too drunk to leave: "He does something that all Barlows seem to do, he gets smashed. I believe it's even a term, getting Barlowed!

"The thing that was supposed to give him courage ends up being another reason why he can't turn up," Mallard explained.

Turning up at the appointment drunk, Mallard said Daisy tells him to leave as he hasn't "stepped up for her".

"It's a good indicator of how someone reacts under those kinds of pressures, and what they'll be like in the future. So I do think she does take this as a character assessment of Daniel."

Will Daisy be ok, and will her relationship with Daniel survive?

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
