Coroner releases identity of man killed in collision on Merced County highway
The Merced County Sheriff Coroner’s Office has identified a man killed in a Merced County collision on Highway 152 as 26-year-old Alberto Guerrero Covarrubias, according to Deputy Alexandra Britton.
California Highway Patrol officers responded to the collision at about 5:40 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Highway 152 and Turner Island Road. Authorities said the man was driving a 2003 Honda Accord southbound on Turner Island Road and for unknown reasons, it appears he failed to stop at a posted stop sign located at the intersection with Highway 152.
Authorities said a 38-year-old Merced woman was driving a 2020 Buick Encore west on Highway 152 and was unable to avoid a collision. The Buick collided with the driver’s side of the Honda and Covarrubias was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Buick and a 12-year-old passenger were both taken to a Modesto hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to the CHP.
