Couple's $21M jackpot win bright spot in tough year

A multi-million-dollar lottery win has helped put a silver lining on an otherwise tough year for a couple from Vaughan, Ont.

Les and Beverley Cassidy won $21.2 million in the Lotto 6/49 draw on Dec. 12. They claimed their winnings Monday at the OLG Toronto Prize Centre.

The win comes at the end of a year in which Les Cassidy left his longtime job as an electrical supervisor and his wife suffered health problems.

While they plan on moving ahead with life as usual, they will also splurge on a few extras, such as some new linens, towels and a possible Alaskan cruise.

"We don't like the heat. We're from Kirkland Lake, so we enjoy the cold," Les Cassidy said Monday.

The couple learned of their win when Beverley Cassidy checked their ticket at a Shoppers Drug Mart store.

"I started jumping up and down and waving out the window to my husband, who was waiting in the car. The whole store was buzzing," she said.
