Coyote attacks, drags dog from Amherstburg yard, police say

Amherstburg Police are warning resident to keep an eye out for coyotes after a small pet dog in Amherstburg was killed by one early Wednesday morning.

Town police say the pet's owner let the Chihuahua outside in the back yard, and watched as it was attacked and dragged away by a coyote.

It happened near County Road 10 and Concession 2 Road North.

"You see them on the tracks every once in a while, or very early in the morning you see them going through the field," said Amherstburg resident Debra Kotyk.

Police are advising residents to pick up after their animals because feces can attract coyotes.

"We're asking pet owners to be cautious of their surroundings, and especially at night, not to let their pets out without bright lights or supervision," said Const. Steve Owen with the Amherstburg police service.

Owens also adds it's also a good practice to trim your bushes so you know what's in your backyard.
