Crews battle townhouse fire in Killarney in southwest Calgary
Emergency crews battled a fire at a townhouse complex in the southwest Calgary neighbourhood of Killarney early Thursday morning.
Firefighters were called to the two-storey building at Killarney Glen Court S.W. at around 6:30 a.m.
Police closed Richmond Road to traffic from 29th Street to 33rd Street S.W. while firefighters extinguished the blaze.
There were no injuries. Five people and a dog got out of the affected units safely. One of the four residences was not occupied, officials say.
"When fire crews arrived on scene, they encountered a large volume of fire that extended from the main floor deck and up to the second floor of the building, encompassing two of the four units," fire department spokesperson Carol Henke said in a release.
The fire badly damaged two residences, and there was significant smoke damage to the other two units in the building.
It appears the fire started on the outside deck of the unit on the west end, Henke said.
Max Pavan, who lives in the complex, said he was alerted to the fire by neighbours banging on doors to wake people up.
"To our knowledge, nobody's been injured. So, that's the main thing," he said.
"It's just very scary to see how fast the fire can spread."
