Crews fight West End house fire

Fire crews were at work in Winnipeg's West End fighting a house fire that broke out Wednesday evening.

Shortly before 6 p.m., flames could be seen pouring out the window of the home on Langside Street, between Sargent and Cumberland avenues.

At around 7 p.m., crews brought in a ladder truck to get a higher angle on the blaze.

District chief Wally Hergesheimer said initial reports indicate there was nobody inside the home when the fire broke out, but crews will investigate further.

The fire had made its way from the basement of the home all the way into the attic, Hergesheimer said. At one point, a portion of the roof collapsed.

"Being a renovated house, crews had a tough time reaching the fire," Hergesheimer said.

"We started off being an offensive strategy, but we moved to a defensive strategy because of the roof collapse at the rear of the house."

The investigation is ongoing.
