The Crown creator Peter Morgan has teased plans for a prequel series, confirming he has "an idea" in his head.

Early last year, it was reported that a new show was in the works set in the era before Elizabeth II ascended to the British throne.

The reports claimed it would start after the death of Queen Victoria and work up until just before the events of the main Netflix series.

Speaking to Variety about whether he would consider a prequel, Morgan replied: “I do have an idea."

“But first, I need to do some other things. Second, it would need a unique set of circumstances to come together," he added.

Asked whether it would predate Elizabeth II, Morgan answered: “Yes. If I were to go back into The Crown, it would definitely be to go back in time.”

Netflix boss Ted Sarandos said of a possible prequel: "I have absolute faith in Peter. And if he believes there are stories to be told there, we definitely would explore it."

It comes ahead of The Crown's sixth and final season, which is due to be released in two parts in November and December.

The episodes are set to follow the Royal Family in the late 90s and early 2000s, and a new trailer for the season has just been released focusing on Princess Diana's death in 1997.

Meanwhile, Morgan has also responded to reports that Diana's 'ghost' will appear in season 6, saying he "never imagined it as Diana's 'ghost' in the traditional sense".

"It was her continuing to live vividly in the minds of those she has left behind," he explained. "Diana was unique, and I suppose that’s what inspired me to find a unique way of representing her. She deserved special treatment narratively."

The Crown seasons 1-5 are streaming on Netflix, with season 6 part 1 premiering on November 16 and season 6 part 2 following on December 14. Seasons 1-4 are also available on DVD and Blu-ray.
