The Crown creator Peter Morgan has responded to rumours Princess Diana's 'ghost' will appear in season six.

Part one of the Netflix show's sixth and final instalment, which premieres on November 16, will depict the events running up to the devastating Paris car crash that claimed Diana's life in 1997.

Earlier this month, Daily Mail claimed that the series will see Diana's 'ghost' appear before Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth.

However, Morgan has now said that he "never imagined it as Diana's 'ghost' in the traditional sense".

He continued: "It was her continuing to live vividly in the minds of those she has left behind.

"Diana was unique, and I suppose that’s what inspired me to find a unique way of representing her. She deserved special treatment narratively."

Elizabeth Debicki reprises her role as Diana in part one of the final season, which will portray the late royal's budding romance with Dodi Fayed (played by Khalid Abdalla), as well as the historic moment in which she walked across a minefield in central Angola.

Part two, which arrives on December 14, will see the Queen (Imelda Staunton) celebrate her Golden Jubilee, as well the marriage between Charles (Dominic West) and Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams).

The final batch of episodes will also follow Prince William (Ed McVey) and Kate Middleton (Meg Bellamy) as they begin their whirlwind romance after meeting at St Andrews University.

Given season six covers events from 1997 to the late 2000s, we'd also expect to see some glimpses of Tony Blair's (Bertie Carvel) time as Prime Minister.

The Crown seasons 1-5 are streaming on Netflix. Seasons 1-4 are also available on DVD and Blu-ray.
