The Crown actor Luther Ford has revealed he used Prince Harry's memoir Spare in order to prepare for playing the Prince on screen.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy ahead of his debut in Season 6, part 2 of the Netflix series – which will see him take over the role from Fflyn Edwards – Ford explained how Harry's audio recordings of the book had been the "perfect tool" to recreate the Prince's voice.

"I listened to the audiobook instead of reading it, so that was useful," he said, adding: "It was good. I mean, it's useful for the voice... It was a perfect tool."

Premiering on December 14 on Netflix, the final instalment will feature Prince Harry's teenage and young adult years, with the series set to end in the early 2000s.

Speaking about whether he used the book for any further inspiration, Ford continued: "It was more the voice. I guess you would start with the scenes and the direction that Peter [Morgan, showrunner] was going in.

"And then maybe if that was then applicable, you would draw details from it," he added.

"But I was listening to it the whole time. For months. If I heard bits it would take me back to how I was feeling in that specific time."

Season 6, part 2 will see Ford joined by fellow newcomers Ed McVey and Meg Bellamy who are playing the young adult versions of Prince William and Kate Middleton – with the pair's first meeting at St Andrew's university to be depicted on screen.

The Crown season 6 part 1 is now streaming on Netflix, with part 2 due out on December 14. Seasons 1-5 are also available on DVD and Blu-ray.
