Dan Walker says people have been 'lecturing' him online about bike helmets after a collision with a car on Monday.

The crash left the Channel 5 news presenter in hospital — with no memory of the incident — with damage done to his face and hands, but luckily no bones were broken.

Walker went on social media to give an update to his followers. He wrote: "It’s odd to get lectured by people telling me that bike helmets aren’t important when the emergency services at the scene yesterday told me I probably wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t wearing one."

He added: "Funny old world! I hope you’re having a good Tuesday. Soup through a straw for lunch."

Walker had earlier shared a picture of him with an ambulance crew and the NHS staff who were looking after him.

Alongside a picture with two paramedics, Walker wrote: "Bit of an accident this morning. Glad to be alive after getting hit by a car on my bike. Face is a mess but I don't think anything is broken. Thanks to Shaun and Jamie for sorting me out and the lovely copper at the scene."

Walker's former colleagues at BBC Breakfast Sally Nugent and Jon Kay also sent him a message while on air.

Nugent said: “Dan Walker, our Dan, was injured after his collision with a car while he was cycling yesterday. Later on he confirmed he’d obviously been checked out and had amazing help from the ambulance service and the NHS and he is now home resting, he’s OK."

Kay added: “It sounds like he was out cold for 20 minutes or so, wasn’t he? Get well soon Dan.”
