Daniel Stern Calls His 'Rookie of the Year' Character Off the Bench to Support the Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs won 103 games this year, giving them the best record in baseball and their most victories in a season since 1910. That has long-suffering fans clinging to the hope that this year’s team will finally be able to shake off a century of misfortune and nab its first World Series title since 1908 (not to mention make its first World Series appearance since 1945). To pitch in, one famous Cubs die-hard has gone back into his own movie past to try to motivate the team to championship glory.
In a new video (via Uproxx; watch it above), actor Daniel Stern pulls his Rookie of the Year character Phil Brickma off the bench — and, some might say, out of relative pop-culture obscurity — for an inspirational speech to pump up the Chicago faithful.

It’s not the first time Stern has revisited one of his notable roles, as earlier this year he re-created the “tarantula scene” from Home Alone (or, at least, his high-pitched scream from that cinematic incident) in a clip posted to Facebook.
While one might argue that Rookie of the Year is far from “beloved” — hence its underwhelming 39% Rotten Tomatoes score — this fan-service video should nonetheless please Cubs loyalists eager to accept any bit of support, karma, or luck that might possibly help the club put to rest its long drought. The Cubs resume their best-of-five playoff series (leading 2 games to 1) against the San Francisco Giants tonight.
