“Daredevil: Born Again” takes the superhero in a 'new direction,' Marvel head of television says

He's more than just a really good lawyer.

Matt Murdock will have to fight Kingpin with more than just his fists in Daredevil: Born Again.

The upcoming Disney+ series will see Charlie Cox’s blind superhero plunged headfirst into a brand new world that requires him to utilize both his physical and mental strengths, Marvel Studios' Head of Streaming, Television and Animation Brad Winderbaum has revealed.

Daredevil is incredible. It’s similar in some ways to X-Men ’97, because it’s reviving something that the fans love, but it is taking it in a new direction,” he explained on Wednesday’s episode of the Official Marvel Podcast. “These characters have matured. The universe is different than it was. Things have changed. Society’s changed.”

After all, it’s been nearly six years since Netflix’s original Daredevil television series ended in 2018. The Hell's Kitchen crimefighter has made several cameos showing off his legal and martial expertise in both film Spider-Man: No Way Home and series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. His nemesis Kingpin (a.k.a Wilson Fisk), played by Vincent D’Onofrio, has also appeared in both Hawkeye and Echo.

“Matt and Wilson have changed, and their characters are gonna collide in ways we’ve never seen before,” Winderbaum continued. “It’s no longer enough to try and murder each other, there’s a whole game of politics at play.”

Daredevil: Born Again, which underwent a complete creative overhaul amid the writers’ and actors’ strikes last year, will also see the return of several other series alums, including Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page, and Elden Henson’s Franklin “Foggy” Nelson.

But Daredevil isn’t the only series coming down the Marvel pipeline. Winderbaum also teased two animated projects — Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and Eyes of Wakanda — both of which are set to be released later this year.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which swings onto Disney+ on Nov. 2, will focus on a teenage Peter Parker and the unique community that surrounds him, including sorceress Nico Minoru, Lonnie Lincoln (a.k.a Tombstone), and Harry Osborn. Eyes of Wakanda, which does not have a confirmed release date, will also have a direct connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“This is a story about Wakandan history. It’s produced by Ryan Coogler, directed by Todd Harris, who is one of our longtime storyboard artists…. It’s an awesome show, the action’s insane, the storytelling is fantastic,” he said. “It’s both about the history of Wakanda, but it also expands into the greater MCU at different time periods. So if you’re a fan of the movies, I think this show’s gonna be a real treat.”

He also issued a word of warning for those excited to see Kathryn Hahn reprise her Wandavision role in her own spinoff starting Sept. 18.

Agatha is...really fun, but it’s really scary and it gets quite dramatic. She’s an amazing anti-hero and that show...lures you in with the fun of Halloween, and before you know it, you’re crying,” he said. “It’s a Marvel brand of scary. It’s a Halloween show. There are deadly stakes in this series. It’s a fun ride, but it’s a dangerous one.”
