Daryl Hannah Is ‘Really Happy Making Films’ as a Director with Husband Neil Young (Exclusive)
After decades of acting, Daryl Hannah became a Grammy nominee for directing the Neil Young & Crazy Heart documentary ‘A Band, A Brotherhood, A Barn’
After years as a screen icon, Daryl Hannah is thriving behind the camera — thanks largely to husband Neil Young.
“I'm editing another documentary that I shot and directed about his last solo tour,” the Splash star, 63, tells PEOPLE. “He called it the ‘hidden hits’ tour because it was all the songs that people don't really know, the B-sides.”
She adds, “That’s all I can say!”
Their latest collaboration comes on the heels of A Band, A Brotherhood, A Barn, which as Hannah notes “was nominated for a Grammy [Award] last year.”
With a laugh, she says that it’s “ridiculous” that it marked her first major award recognition, particularly after decades of onscreen work in Roxanne, Wall Street, Steel Magnolias and the Kill Bill movies.
“I get kind of a stomach ache when I see trailers and base camps, when I drive by movie sets,” admits Hannah. “Because I think I had enough gnarly experiences that it somehow affected me in a strange way.”
That’s why working with her husband, 78, as a filmmaker is what consumes Hannah these days. “I'm really happy making films,” says the director. A Band, A Brotherhood, A Barn came after 2019’s Mountaintop, another intimate documentary showcasing Young’s creative process with his longtime band, Crazy Horse.
And in 2018, Hannah helmed a more poetic film, Paradox, featuring the “Heart of Gold” singer and his then-backing band Promise of the Real. Distributor Netflix describes it as “a ”fantasy, a loud poem and a free-spirited tale of music and love.”

Hannah and Young went public with their relationship in 2014, around the time they led an anti-Keystone XL pipeline march together in Washington, D.C. Four years later they tied the knot in two under-the-radar ceremonies — first on the Canadian singer’s yacht in Washington’s San Juan islands, then a bigger celebration in California, with Joni Mitchell and Young’s former bandmate Stephen Stills reportedly in attendance.
“We’re very lucky to have found each other,” Young told Yahoo in 2018 not long after the nuptials. “I’m eternally thankful for the opportunity to share my life with her, and she feels the same.”
He added that Hannah has helped him “physically to be stronger; she’s got a really intense physical regimen she follows, and I crawl along behind her… We do Pilates twice a week, sometimes three times a week, and get in the pool with weights.”

A source told PEOPLE in 2018 the couple “bonded over their activism” and volunteerism.
“Neil’s biggest passion in life is the environment. Daryl is the exact same,” said the source at the time.
Now, the Sense8 star says collaborating with her husband feels more fulfilling than any potential acting job. “I don't have an agent, I don't have a publicist, I'm not looking for movies or anything to be in,” she says.
“I suppose if it's something really cool,” she adds, “I might do it, but I'm not really looking for it. I've got enough creative projects on my plate.”
Asked if her husband has a favorite Daryl Hannah movie, she just laughs. “I have no idea!”
