Dave Myers - updates: BBC pays tribute in first Hairy Bikers episode aired since Myers’s death
The BBC has paid tribute to Dave Myers in a new episode of The Hairy Bikers Go West, in which the late TV chef appears posthumously following his death last week.
Myers died aged 66, two years after revealing he had been diagnosed with cancer. The news was shared by his co-star and close friend Si King on Thursday (29 February).
Introducing the first episode ofThe Hairy Bikers Go West aired since Myers’s death, a BBC Two channel controller paid tribute to the TV star in a voiceover, saying he was “gone but not forgotten” on Tuesday (5 March).
Fans said they were left in tears by the episode, which was recorded last year. In it, Myers discussed his cancer treatment and King surprised him with a day out on a steam train to cheer him up from a “rough time”.
Myers found fame alongside King, his best friend and work partner of 30 years, as part of the motorcycle-riding cooking duo. Together, they have toured the UK – and the world – in search of new recipes, and adventures.
In a tribute, King said: “I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime.”
“I wish you god’s speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world. See you on the other side. Love ya.”

Fans have been paying tribute to Myers as the BBC currently airs the first episode of The Hairy Bikers since the TV chef’s death last week.
“Bittersweet watching @HairyBikers tonight,” wrote one viewer on X/Twitter. “So amazing they got to do it but now knowing it was the last trip is heartbreaking #davemyers RIP.”
Another added: “This evening’s episode is both beautiful and heartbreaking. Every time they refer to each other as ‘best mate’ – everyone should have that kind of love in their lives.”

Hairy Bikers fans are recalling a moving piece of advice Dave Myers gave Si King in a recent episode of Go West.
After candidly sharing details of his cancer diagnosis, Myers issued some advice to his friend, whom he met in 1996: “One thing I’d say is you have to live for today – don’t live for tomorrow because you don’t know what’s around the corner. It could be a double-decker bus. Live for today and don’t worry so much.
“I’ve always been a stupid worrier. Big stuff, I’m alright, but I worry about the daft stuff. But now I’m learning, I’m like, ‘Come on Myers get it in perspective!”

Strictly Come Dancing star Karen Hauer led the tributes to her former dance partner and “dear friend” Dave Myers.
In an Instagram post, she said: “Dave, You taught me how to have fun and to take on the day with a big smile.
“Rest well my dear friend. I’m going to miss you so much.”
Countdown star Rachel Riley, who also appeared on series 11 of Strictly, remembered Myers as a “great bloke” and posted a selection of photos to social media of the late TV star dancing.

Myers and his co-star King have been praised for shaping cookery shows at the turn of the century.
TV writer Stuart Heritage has praised the pair for shifting portrayals of masculinity on screen, too.
Heritage writes in The Guardian about how the biking duo entered TV cooking at a time when Gordon Ramsay was “screaming at celebrities on Hell’s Kitchen and swaggering around like a concussed Liam Gallagher on The F Word.”
“To cook on television at this time, especially as a man, meant leaping through millions of reductive macho hoops to show how tough you were.”
Myers and King were different, Heritage writes.
“[They] were sensitive, erudite and boundlessly enthusiastic. They weren’t just unfailingly polite to their host countries, but the ease with which they could access their emotions felt genuinely groundbreaking for the time.”

In a June 2023 interview with The Times, King revealed that Myers immediately called him after learning of his cancer diagnosis.
“I was driving. I had to pull over,” he said, adding: “It’s so distressing. It’s very difficult to verbalise. There’s a sense of loss, but there’s also that sense of hope, you know, knowing my mate as I do.”
King called Myers “a scrapper” and “a fighter”, adding: “But there were certain points that I thought, ‘Where’s it going to go? What is happening to my friend?’”
King went on: “And it’s funny, you know, when you see somebody you love so much in so much distress, it’s very hard to know what to do. My character and personality is, naturally, I just want to fix it. I just want to fix it. I get very distressed when I can’t.”

They have published more than 25 cookery books.
The pair documented their weight loss in Hairy Dieters: How To Love Food And Lose Weight, when they embarked on a campaign to lose two-and-a-half stone in three months, and comfortably passed their targets.
In January 2014, they launched The Hairy Bikers Diet Club, which includes recipes and tips to help people to live a healthier life, while not starving themselves.
Myers and King are currently on TV in the BBC Two series The Hairy Bikers Go West, which started earlier this month.

Hairy Biker’s funeral plans released as his last wish for guests revealed

Dave Myers arranged his funeral plans before his death, and had important one wish for guests, according to reports.
His plans included his coffin being carried out to The Best is Yet To Come by The Scorpions in order to “cheer everyone up”, he said in an interview from 2014.
He wanted guest to be served vodka martinis as they arrived “to get everyone loosened up”, and then have a reading of William Blake’s Innocence and Vaughan Williams’ Lark Ascending “to get them crying”.
Talking about how he wants people to reflect on his life, Myers told the Mailonline: “Just have a go and never limit your ambitions. Aim for the moon and you might just get there. As my dad used to say, ‘You’ve got to fill in your coupon, or you’ll never win the Pools’.”

A muddy tribute to Myers

Ricky Minns, 49, has created a muddy portrait of Myers and his on-screen partner Si King after hearing the news of Myers’s death.
Minns, who creates art using mud, wiped away muck from his van to draw their faces.

Hairy Biker’s funeral plans released as his last wish for guests revealed

Dave Myers arranged his funeral plans before his death, and had important one wish for guests, according to reports.
His plans included his coffin being carried out to The Best is Yet To Come by The Scorpions in order to “cheer everyone up”, he said in an interview from 2014.
He wanted guest ti be served vodka martinis as they arrived “to get everyone loosened up”, and then have a reading of William Blake’s Innocence and Vaughan Williams’ Lark Ascending “to get them crying”.
Talking about how he wants people to reflect on his life, Myers told the Mailonline: “Just have a go and never limit your ambitions. Aim for the moon and you might just get there. As my dad used to say, ‘You’ve got to fill in your coupon, or you’ll never win the Pools’.”

Dave Myers’s wife Liliana has paid tribute to the late Hairy Biker following his death aged 66.
Myers was a chef and media personality, who rose to fame 30 years ago alongside his best friend and work partner Si King, as part of the motorcycle-riding cooking TV duo the Hairy Bikers.
King initially announced Myers’s death on Thursday morning (29 February), telling fans: “I am not sure I can put into words on how I feel at the moment.”
Liliana then broke her silence, sharing a Facebook post of a series of photographs of Myers, with the words: “Rest in peace, my love.”
