Details announced for new public housing projects in Kentville, Bridgewater
The Nova Scotia government is continuing to roll out projects tied to the promise it made last fall to build 222 new public housing units.
According to Nova Scotia government news releases, the provincial government will build a three-storey, 21-unit apartment building at 59 Exhibition Drive in Bridgewater. Construction is expected to start this spring and be completed by the fall of 2026.
It's a much shorter construction schedule for an apartment roughly half that size in Kentville. The two-storey structure will go up at 55 Oakdene Avenue. It will have 11 units.
Both buildings will consist of a mix of one- to three-bedroom apartments. Those on the ground floor will be fully accessible.
All told, the public housing units will be home to as many as 119 people. There are currently 591 people on the public housing waitlist in both communities — 239 in Bridgewater and 352 in Kentville.
On Wednesday, the province also announced 22 new units for Glace Bay to house up to 56 people.
The three-storey building is expected to go up on Sterling Road next to the John Dan Complex, with construction slated to begin next year and the units available in 2026.
The money to build these new units is coming from the federal and provincial governments.
The funding was announced in September for a total of 222 units.
The province has already announced 150 for Halifax Regional Municipality and it says the remainder will be announced soon.
