Doctor Who spoilers follow.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has shed some light on a series 14 episode featuring The Beatles.

The writer was recently speaking to Digital Spy and other media about the wide variety of stories lined up for the new series, when he dropped a hint that the Fab Four would appear in the BBC series.

He shared some unfinished production art from the episode during his BBC documentary Imagine... Russell T Davies, revealing that The Doctor and Ruby Sunday will have an adventure with John, Paul, George and Ringo during a visit to their iconic recording studio Abbey Road in 1963.

"This is Abbey Road in 1963. It’s very unbuilt at the moment," he said of the preview. "This is going to be Studio 1 at Abbey Road – the big studio, the big orchestral studio.

"It has to be said, there’s a great big battle in here to save the universe, with people being flung all over the place and a moving piano."

There is no shortage of unusual characters in The Beatles' music who could become Doctor Who villains – like the Blue Meanie from Yellow Submarine, Maxwell and his deadly silver hammer (bang! bang!) or maybe Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is actually a renegade Time Lord?

This upcoming episode won't actually be the first appearance by The Beatles in a Doctor Who episode. In 1966 serial The Chase, The Doctor's companion Vicky stops to watch The Beatles performing 'Ticket to Ride' on TV.

But before The Doctor and Ruby take a trip to 1963, they will have to deal with an invasion of The Goblin King and his minions in this year's Christmas special 'The Church on Ruby Road'.

Doctor Who continues with 'The Church on Ruby Road', airing on Christmas Day (December 25). The show airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere.

Classic episodes of Doctor Who are now made available via BBC iPlayer in the UK as well.
