Dog has ‘first day of forever’ with family after nearly 300 days in Florida shelter
After spending almost 300 days in a Florida shelter, one pup got to experience his first days in his new home – and he was quick to settle in.
Gibson, a 4-year-old lab mix, was found in Escambia County and brought to the Department of Animal Welfare shelter in February, according to Facebook posts by the shelter.
“Gibson is there at no fault of his own. He was dumped, like trash,” WolfGang Pensacola wrote in a Facebook post in October. “So, Gibson has anxiety around other dogs and would do better in a home where he is the only child. Heck, someone who will snuggle him, take him for hikes, and possibly train him.”
Over the months, the shelter posted about Gibson on Facebook, hoping someone would see the little brown dog and fall in love with him.
“He is a 100% certified Good Boy and will shake for treats – paw and tail included,” the shelter wrote on Facebook in June.
But month after month, Gibson stayed in the four walls of the shelter.
Then on Nov. 11, his luck changed.
“They say that 11/11 is a lucky day, and for Gibson, that couldn’t have been more true. Gibson had been staying with us for almost 300 days, waiting very patiently to go home to his forever family,” the shelter said. “Finally, on November 11th, Gibson’s wish for a family came true.”
The Wingards in Pensacola opened “their home and their hearts” and decided to make Gibson part of their family.
On the same day that Gibson came home, his new mom sent an update on his condition to the shelter.
“He’s adjusting VERY well, has eaten and drank, and is now tuckered out beside me on the couch snoring away,” his new mom wrote in an email to the shelter.
“He’s such a sweet boy, and I am forever thankful to y’all for trusting us with him,” his mom said. “Today is the first day of forever with this angel baby.”
The Escambia County Department of Animal Welfare is located in Pensacola, about 200 miles west of Tallahassee.
