Is Dolphins’ performance on offense a blip or cause for concern as injuries mount?

The Dolphins scored 27 points against the Tennessee Titans on Monday night, but Miami’s offense struggled in one of its worst performances of the season.

The unit totaled 366 yards, its third-lowest output of the season, and was 2 of 5 in the red zone and 1 of 4 in goal-to-go situations. One touchdown came courtesy of a pick-six from the defense. The offense’s two touchdown drives were aided by short fields that began in Tennessee’s red zone after Titans giveaways.

A stout defensive game plan from Tennessee prevented the Dolphins’ big-play offense from finding success in the passing game. So did injuries to notable players who were either inactive or had to leave in the middle of the game.

The offense is looking to fix the mistakes that contributed to a frustrating night and historic fourth-quarter collapse but will have to do so without a key contributor for the rest of the season, and the availability of other players is up in the air for Sunday’s home game against the New York Jets.

The most notable of the concerns involves wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who was limited for parts of the Titans game because of an ankle injury. Hill, who said he has been dealing with ankle issues all season, was listed as a nonparticipant in injury reports on Wednesday and Thursday. The team did not practice Wednesday and held a walkthrough Thursday.

This season, Miami’s offense has been slightly more efficient when Hill is on the field, averaging 6.9 yards per play, compared to when he is off the field, averaging 6.5 yards per play, according to TruMedia.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa acknowledged that the offense “got a little out of sorts” without Hill, who he called the team’s Most Valuable Player. Coach Mike McDaniel, while saying the team would not risk further injury to Hill, said he has a “huge impact on the game when he has the ball and when he doesn’t.

“It’s very much like any one of the best players in the league,” McDaniel said. “It has nothing to do with anybody else. We have a lot of capable playmakers, a lot of really talented people on the team. But everybody knows that there’s someone that you can’t exactly replicate anywhere, let alone on this team. So he’s a special player for us and he will always have an impact on the game, even when he’s not catching the ball or doing those things. Just by his presence out there, you have to account for him.

Offensive coordinator Frank Smith said the team’s practice regimen during the offseason and training camp, which included substituting myriad pass-catchers for reps with Tagovailoa, will help prepare them for if Hill cannot play.

If ‘Reek’ [Hill] isn’t available, I think [wide receiver] Jaylen [Waddle] understands his role with stepping up,” Tagovailoa said. “I think everyone else understands their role, as well. It’s tough not having someone like Tyreek out there when sort of the entirety of the offseason was built around him and also Jaylen, and now you take away one of those pieces and guys can double Jaylen and leave other guys 1-on-1. It gives other guys opportunities that can really do something special for us.”

McDaniel already said he would be surprised if right guard Robert Hunt would play Sunday as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. The availability of offensive linemen Liam Eichenberg (calf) and Terron Armstead (knee/ankle) and rookie De’Von Achane (toe) are also in question as they have been listed on this week’s injury report.

Eichenberg’s injury is especially notable as the Dolphins are preparing to finish the season without center Connor Williams, who sustained a season-ending ACL tear against the Titans. Williams has been one of the league’s best centers, but Miami will now have to move forward without a player who plays an integral role in the offensive line’s communication.

Amid the uncertainty surrounding the center position, Miami signed veterans Jonotthan Harrison and Matt Skura to the active roster and practice squad, respectively. But neither has appeared in a game this season. In an offense highly predicated on timing, it makes the Dolphins’ situation all the more precarious.

Smith said it wouldn’t be unprecedented for either to start Sunday after joining the team midweek. And Tagovailoa said he has already begun working with the two new additions

But the short week after “Monday Night Football” creates even more moving parts for the Dolphins’ offense, from injury uncertainty to honing in on corrections from the Titans game.
