Dolphins RB De’Von Achane named AFC Offensive Player of the Week

Dolphins rookie running back De’Von Achane has been named AFC Offensive Player of the Week, the NFL announced Wednesday, after totaling 233 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns in a 70-20 win against the Denver Broncos.

It’s the first such honor for Achane, who became the second NFL player ever and first since 1961 — when John F. Kennedy was President — with 200 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns and two touchdown receptions in a game.

Achane’s 203 rushing yards and four touchdowns are a franchise rookie record.

“For him to come in and do the things he did, he had 208 — 203? Still, 200 is still a lot,” running back Raheem Mostert said after Sunday’s game. “To be able to come in as a rookie, to do that, it just speaks volumes on the type of character that he has.”

Achane is the first Dolphins rookie to be named Offensive Player of the Week since running back Karim Abdul-Jabbar in Week 1 of the 1996 season.

Achane is the second Dolphin to earn Player of the Week honors this season. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week after a season-opening performance in which he threw for 466 yards and three touchdowns.
