Driver caught fleeing scene of crash which killed father and son

A dangerous driver has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after killing a father and son who were out cycling together in January 2023.

CCTV footage from the night of the incident shows Paul Yates, 36, driving his extremely damaged vehicle, before attempting to flee on foot by jumping over a gate.

He got behind the wheel of his car while uninsured and only holding a provisional driving licence, after spending the evening socialising in Barnsley on 20 January 2023.

Yates attempted to overtake a vehicle on a single carriageway, during which he lost control of the car and left the carriageway, travelling at speed towards Dean Jones, 44, and Lewis Daines, 16.

Following the collision, he got out of his car and walked over to the father and son who were critically injured on the ground, before getting back in his vehicle and fleeing the scene.
