Drivers asked to exercise caution as snow, freezing rain forecast for B.C. Interior highways
Drivers are being asked to exercise caution in B.C.'s southern Interior as snow and freezing rain is expected starting Wednesday afternoon.
Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for the Coquihalla Highway and Okanagan Connector, as well as the South Thompson, Nicola and Similkameen regions and 100 Mile.
The weather agency says freezing rain could create icy surfaces, and power outages are possible as ice builds up. The freezing rain is expected to end, or change to rain, Thursday morning.
Drivers should expect "rapidly deteriorating conditions," including highway closures, the Ministry of Transportation says, adding that highway travel is discouraged if freezing rain does develop.
Anyone planning to travel should have winter tires on their vehicle, carry extra food, water and medication, and should ensure they have a full tank of gas, or charge, before heading out.
Road maintenance crews will be on highways during the storm, plowing, sanding and salting. Drivers are asked to give them space and avoid passing plows until it is safe to do so.
