Drone Captures 'Perfect' Circles Formed on Frozen Utah Lake

A drone flying over Bear Lake in Garden City, Utah, captured a spectacular sight as circles formed on the partially frozen surface on March 9.

The footage was captured by local photographer Carol Dyer, who said she was “amazed” by how “perfect” the circles formed on the iced waters were.

“Instead of the mysterious crop circles that appear in fields, we have ice circles that form on the surface of bodies of water during the winter months,” Dyer wrote on Facebook.

A Utah Department of Natural Resources spokesperson told Storyful that an aquatics expert within the department believed the circles are forming where "there is upwelling of water.”

The spokesperson added, “The perfect circle is likely because the ice is flat and level in those areas, so it spreads out evenly. In other areas, you don’t have those circles, or you have them wiped out by areas where there are large fissures in the ice, so you get more of a line and some irregular patterns — presumably from more water upwelling or even currents and wind pushing water through the fissure.

“So, if it’s a fissure, you don’t get a circle, and if it’s just a spot with a hole and upwelling, you get a circle,” the spokesperson said. Credit: Carol Dyer via Storyful
