Dying Vietnam veteran reunited with his horses one last time

A paralyzed veteran who dedicated his life to horse training was given the chance to connect with his beloved animals one last time.

Roberto Gonzalez is a Vietnam War veteran who was paralyzed May 21,1970, only a few months into his service. His life-changing injury never stopped Roberto from pursuing his true passion, reports News 4 SA.

“Horses are his life. We’ve been training and raising horses for over 30, 40 years,” said Roberto’s wife Rosario Gonzalez. "My husband was one of the only handicapped or paralyzed licensed horse trainers in Texas.”

But recently Roberto’s health has taken an unfortunate turn for the worse. His organs have begun to fail, and doctors at Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, aren’t optimistic about Roberto’s ability to recover.

That’s why Roberto, as his dying wish, requested to see his two horses Ringo and Sugar one last time.

A Facebook post by South Texas Veterans Health Care System shows Roberto lying in his bed, after being wheeled outside the Veteran’s hospital, to pay a visit with his closest four-legged friends.

“When the horse came up to him he actually opened his eyes. They came up to him and I think they were actually kissing him,” said Rosario.

The emotional dying wish also happened to occur on the 46th anniversary of Roberto’s war injury, a major setback that never stopped him from achieving his goals.
