EA has responded to criticism of the box art for EA Sports FC 24's Ultimate Edition.

The title is Electronic Arts' first since it lost the licence to use the FIFA name, and the publisher's grand unveiling of the cover art for the premium version has been hit with some criticism.

The image features a host of legendary players, from Drogba to Beckham, Rashford to Pelé, Scott to Putellas, and many more.

The issue is, these are digital models of the players rather than a group photo (they are busy and expensive people, understandably), and fans have had their say comparing them to character models from The Sims, or CGI renders from the PS2 generation. Pirlo, in particular, has been called out for looking kind of haunted.

In response, EA executive producer John Shepherd VP has blamed the cover's quality on licencing issues, and has promised that the game's visuals will be better.

In an interview with IGN he said: "The amount of licenses we have in this game and doing something like that, even to begin with, to have that many players on a cover, is no easy feat. And the amount of approvals you then need to work through is also highly complex. I don't want to dwell on that, but a big part of it is working through all of those pieces.

"The key thing is, and I think it's really important, is we're doing so much to improve player likeness. Our visuals are going to be amazing. We see the feedback. We also see tremendous positive feedback as well about that cover and what it represents, and also what it means for FC going forward."

The cover may have got an "amount of approvals" from various parties, but it certainly hasn't got the approval of fans. Hopefully the improvements to players' likeness extends to the box art as well as the game itself by the time it releases.
