EastEnders lining up dark storyline twist for Jay Brown

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders is set to air a drugs storyline for Jay Brown as he copes with the loss of his wife Lola.

The character played by Jamie Borthwick has been struggling to deal with Lola's death. Earlier this year, the hairdresser played by Danielle Harold passed away after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour, leaving Jay and her daughter Lexi devastated.

In upcoming scenes, Jay will be taking ketamine in an attempt to soothe his grief.

The new storyline follows scenes of Jay getting to know Nadine, who bares a strong resemblance to his late wife.

In a recent episode, Jay spent the night with Nadine, who works as an escort, though the pair simply slept next to each other.

The following day, he wrestled with his guilt as Ben and Callum were worried about him not being at home. They then hinted at it being too soon for Jay to see other people.

Earlier this month, Harold won a National Television Award for her portrayal of Lola Pearce-Brown.

The actress and the soap helmed by executive producer Chris Clenshaw worked closely with Brain Tumour Research and Macmillan Cancer Support and patients and families affected by terminal brain cancer to deliver an accurate portrayal.

Harold also touched upon filming the difficult storyline, explaining her co-stars on set were very "respectful".

"I can't tell you how respectful it felt, it really was a completely different vibe that I had never felt before," she said.

"I think it was because everyone on set had been affected by cancer, so it just meant so much to everybody that we got it correct."

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
