Edmonton police investigating fatal crash on Whitemud Drive

Edmonton police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash Friday evening.

The collision happened after 6 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Whitemud Drive near 53rd Avenue.

The vehicle was driving westbound on the Whitemud when it suddenly veered to the left and struck the centre median, then a utility pole, Edmonton police said in a news release Friday night.

The car eventually travelled north again and came to a rest in the westbound lanes of the Whitemud.

A 56-year-old woman who was driving a Mitsubishi Mirage was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Police said alcohol and speed were not factors in the collision.

The Edmonton police major collision investigations unit has taken over the investigation.

Motorists were being asked to avoid that area of westbound Whitemud Drive until around 11 p.m.

Police are asking drivers passing through the area to slow down and be mindful that investigators are working on the road.

This is the city's 29th traffic fatality this year, police said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the Edmonton police complaint line at 780-423-4567 or 311 on their mobile phone.
