  • Volkswagen's all-electric I.D. Crozz SUV has been caught testing on public roads.

  • We expect the production version of this new electric SUV to be unveiled sometime in 2020.

  • Volkswagen says the I.D. Crozz will offer about 300 miles of driving range and make 302 horsepower from two onboard electric motors.

Volkswagen's long-awaited foray into long-range electric-only vehicles will kick off soon with the I.D. Crozz, pictured here in light camouflage as it undergoes testing on public roads. First previewed at the 2017 Shanghai auto show, then again with a slightly more production-ready concept, the I.D. Crozz we see here retains the concept car's rakish roofline but with a more truncated rear liftgate.

It appears as though the concept's sliding rear doors have been scrapped in favor of conventional front-hinged units. Bright LED strips highlight the head- and taillamps, and a slightly concave front fascia resembles that of the concept car.

Under the I.D. Crozz's stubby hood, we expect to find an electric motor that will drive the front wheels; a second electric motor will drive the rear wheels, making the I.D. Crozz an all-wheel drive vehicle. Volkswagen has claimed a 300-mile range from the crossover's 83-kWh battery pack and has said that the combined power output of the two electric motors should be 302 horsepower.

DC fast charging should be a popular feature, and with it, Volkswagen says, the I.D. Crozz will be able to gain 80 percent of its battery life in just 30 minutes when plugged into a 150-kWh charging station. Production will initially be handled by a European factory, but Volkswagen intends to build the I.D. Crozz at its Chattanooga, Tennessee, manufacturing facility that currently builds the Atlas SUV and the Passat sedan. We're expecting to see the global debut of the production I.D. Crozz sometime in 2020.

The I.D. Crozz will ride on VW's modular MEB platform, which will spawn an entire lineup of EVs. That lineup has been previewed by the I.D. Roomzz, I.D. Buzz, and ID.3 concepts.
